1. How to Measure Your Space

Before buying any appliance, you must measure the physical space where the unit will live, as well as the path to get it there.

Measure the Cutout Space: Measure from side to side at the top, middle, and bottom, using the smallest measurement. Measure the height from the floor to the bottom of any overhead cabinets or countertops, checking both the front and the back. Measure the depth from the back wall to the front edge of your counters or cabinets.

Measure the Delivery Path: Measure the width and height of every doorway, hallway, and staircase the appliance must pass through from the street to its final location. Include tight corners and account for doorknobs or handrails.

2. Refrigerator Sizing Guide

Refrigerators require precise measurements to ensure doors can open fully and the unit can vent properly.

Standard Dimensions: Standard depth typically ranges from 30 to 34 inches and protrudes past standard counters. Counter-depth models are typically 24 to 28 inches deep and align nearly flush with cabinets. Widths range from 24 inches for compact or apartment models to 36 inches for standard family sizes, with built-in models reaching up to 48 inches.

Clearance Requirements: Add one-half inch to one inch of clearance on the top, back, and sides for proper airflow and ventilation. Ensure there is enough clearance in front of the refrigerator for the doors to swing open at least 90 degrees. If placing next to a wall, allow at least 2.5 inches between the hinge side of the door and the wall.

3. Washer and Dryer Sizing Guide

Washers and dryers need extra space for hoses, venting, and door clearance.

Standard Dimensions: Width is typically 27 inches for standard models or 29 inches for large capacity. Depth is typically 30 to 34 inches. Height is typically 38 to 43 inches for front-load models or 42 to 44 inches for top-load models with control panels.

Clearance Requirements: Add at least 4 to 6 inches of clearance behind the units to accommodate water hoses and the dryer vent exhaust. Add one inch of clearance on the sides of and between the units to reduce noise and vibration. Leave at least 48 inches of clearance in front of the units to allow doors to open fully and give you room to load and unload. For top-loading washers, ensure you have at least 20 inches of clearance above the machine to open the lid fully.

4. Stove and Range Sizing Guide

Ranges are generally standardized, but depth and height can vary slightly.

Standard Dimensions: The standard width for a freestanding range is 30 inches. Pro-style or larger ranges may be 36 or 48 inches. Compact ranges are typically 20 or 24 inches. Depth is typically 25 to 27 inches excluding handles. Standard counter height is 36 inches. Freestanding ranges usually have a backguard that brings the total height to 46 to 48 inches.

Clearance Requirements: All freestanding ranges must have an anti-tip bracket installed at the floor and wall junction. There must be a minimum of 30 inches of clearance between the cooking surface and the bottom of an unprotected wood or metal cabinet above it.
